there are a lot of people that think direct drives (you mention VPI... their DD cla$$ic is highly regarded), and technics & clones in particular sound great, especially after tonearm swaps. i never heard anything objectionable from the 1200s at college.
i'm STILL inclined to go the pioneer TPX-1000 or used 1200 route because 1. i've wanted a 1200 since the 80s, 2. they're built like tanks, 3. they're the ONLY affordable tables out there... especially if one's priorities are bass & dynamics which are DD's forte.
i'm NOT investing $2,000 for JUST a turntable because ALL greedy TT manufacturers refuse to sell any blank tables for less than that. one used to be able to get SOTAs WITH tonearms for about $800 back in the day, and if memory serves me right, AR tables were about $350.
vinyl will NOT be the focus of my system which will approach $10,000 when and if i build it and take a couple years to get there, so i'm not hearing VPI, clearadio or rega etc. whether or not regas run fast, they'd be the LAST table i'd ever buy. i'm in the camp that doesn't like their light flimsy build. i like tables that are big & heavy.
i disagree about platter mass. heavier platters WOULD be much less prone wow & flutter... it's basic newtonian physics... an object in motion tends to remain in motion & irresistible force vs immovable object and all that jazz. heavier platters would reject noise better IF they don't generate it by overloading the bearings too. there's a reason why platters get bigger and bigger as one moves up in any manufacturer's line.
as far as turntables go... i'm totally in the mass damping camp having owned flimsy lightweight BSRs & technics that'd skip if one merely walks across the floor in an old apartment.
