If you put a heavy platter on a 1200 and turn it on nothing would happen.
Standard measurements on TTs have never told us very much. The DD TTs have always had great specs, even the cheap ones, but they sound like crap. If good measurements don't comport with good sound we are not measuring the right thing. Expensive, heavy, ones can sound great.
I would rather listen to a VPI mid range TT set to go slightly fast than listen to a 1200 any day. But there's really no reason to do so. Fremer's review of the old Rega says they have accurate speed. The current model seems to be 0.2% fast. Hard to figure why Rega does that, though speed accuracy is very difficult in a BD turntable without a speed controller or a conical motor pully. Just changing the bearing oil can alter the speed.
