There are 2 ways of distributing 3 phase power, wye and delta, depends on the way the supply transformer is wound. The center of wye transformer is a neutral, and has 4 outputs (3 phases and a neutral), a delta transformer has only three outputs (no neutral). See the link below. As Coffee Phil pointed out:
"When most of us refer to the number of poles in an AC motor we mean the number of poles in each phase, which can be any even number."
My three phase 4 pole Papst motor actually has 12 coils, 4 per phase. Since the motor is delta wound there are only 3 leads, if it was a wye wound three phase 4 pole motor it would also have 12 coils but connected differently and would have 4 leads.
The variable frequency 3 phase supply that I built has three single phase transformers wired together as a 3 phase transformer. I can connect the primaries in either wye or delta, same with the secondaries. That means I can wire it as a delta/delta, or wye/wye, or delta/wye or wye/delta.
Since my supply consists of a three phase generator running three class D amps, and each amp + and - amp outputs are connected to the primaries of three single phase transformers. In effect the primaries of the three single phase transformers when used together as a 3 phase transformer, are wired wye with an unconnected floating neutral, and the secondaries are connected delta. I can also wire my secondaries in wye and the 3 lead motor will run just fine with an unconnected floating neutral. Multi phase AC power is quite interesting, thank you Mr. Tesla.
