RE: Is this a 4 pole Aussenlaufer?

Hi Ugly,

You can sort the speed with this inexpensive tach which I linked from Amazon.

I do believe that the motor made for Thorens by Papst was indeed an Aussenlaufer however it is not synchronous. It is an induction motor with a well defined slip versus torque characteristic. I believe Thorens controlled the speed with an eddy current magnetic brake.

If you get the tach you can check that by rubbing your finger on the rotor and seeing if it slows.

I don't think you can tell by looking at the rotor. I believe that rather than a laminated core and a shorted squirrel cage it uses solid steel and the Eddy current in the rotor to serve as the squirrel cage. A hysteresis motor uses a hardened steel rotor.
