Thanks for the post.
I was just seeking any advice that anyone was willing to offer regarding what to do about the dimple, that is if it's even necessary to do anything at all. I just want it to make sure I'm not overlooking addressing something easy. Since I'm not a machinist I figured I better ask.
A thrust plate at the bottom of the bearing well, eh? Do you know if the ball is supposed to spin while the table is in operation? I had wondered if a sapphire ball would damage the bottom of the bearing well by spinning...I think I may have the platter spindle covered, so to speak..
I found the sapphire thrust plates I linked in the post you replied to. My thinking was I could bond these to the steel as an interface to the ball where the ball comes into contact. I had envisioned having one at the end of the platter spindle in order to protect the platter spindle from the ball (if I went to a sapphire ball). I may even consider having a relief machined into the end of the platter spindle to accept a thrust pad and avoid having the platter "shimmed" up by the thickness of the thrust pad.
I don't know how I'd be able to get a delrin or sapphire thrust pad correctly positioned and bonded into the bottom of the bearing well.
Would you recommend Delrin over a sapphire thrust plate if the plan was to use a sapphire or ceramic ball?
The ball which came with the table is around 5/16 inch. I don't know if it is the right one or not. It seems to work alright when I spin the platter by hand.
The arm is pretty cool, and I'm excited about it but it needs a bit of love as it sits.
