Like Crazy Dave below, I also sold audio in the 80's (though just part-time to give the owner an extra day off), and though I may be living in the past, I'm thinking your dealer should be able to do better than just imply that the TT2 is better than a TT1; they should be equipped to demonstrate it (presuming it's even true). They should also be prepared to compare their TT1 with your Shure M97xE against your NAD 533 with the IQ3 cartridge, the TT1 against your 533 with the same cartridge mounted, etc. In short, the dealer's purpose should be to let your ears decide what the best upgrade for you will be by providing meaningful comparative auditions.
Like others, I believe a better turntable with modest cartridge will outperform a better cartridge on a lesser 'table. This was first demonstrated to me at a shop in Seattle which painstakingly compared my Thorens TD146 against an LP12 using both expensive and cheap cartridges in several arrangements (this shop was closed to regular traffic on Mondays to provide appointment times for private, extensive demonstrations). The end result was my buying an LP12/Basik Plus/Basik combination, and I, too, am currently enjoying an M97xE on my Linn LP12 (upgraded in 1993 to Cirkus status and with an Ittok LVIII arm).
I'm not saying I couldn't get better sound from a better cartridge, but my 'table is emminently satisfying even with budget models, and $70.00 annual stylus replacements are a better fit for my teacher's salary than higher-cost options.
