RE: Can a cartridge be too good for a table?

Many years ago Linn used a demonstration of their LP12/Ittok fitted with a budget cartridge compared as a lesser arm/turntable combination with a very expensive cartridge. The other turntable/arm was a Rega which Linn, to their credit, rated as the best inexpensive 'table they could find (at that time). The cheap cart in the better 'table/arm sounded preferable to the expensive cart in the cheap 'table/arm.

For those that heard it the outcome was not to be forgotten. I remember angry people accusing Linn of rigging the demonstration which, from numerous latter experiences, I can say that they certainly hadn't. That was in the 1970s when most enthusiasts thought that the sole role of the turntable was to revolve at 33.3 rpm. Much has been learned since then.

The RB250 arm is very good (aside from a few obvious problems for many, like you can't adjust most of the geometry e.g. VTA, azimuth etc.) But the P2 is the real limitation on what you want to do.

My advice? Just buy a better turntable first or you are throwing money away and wasting a good cartridge. If you do this you won't believe how good your Shure sounds.

If you are buying from Kevin Galloway pass him my regards (Pete Rogers).
