If your friend is really good with his hands and has some real mechanical/engineering aptitude I'd asy go for it, as long as he's careful and doesn't actually break smething that arm could always be sent to any number of outfits and would return done up right.IMHO SME 3009 series III's are superb Ultralight/light tonearms
and well worth working with, I believe they are so common, available for reasonable cost and outside the box as far as design, that a lot of us automatically under-rate them, but within thier effective mass limitations they offer a tremendous amount of tweakability and range particularly if yours is fitted with a damping trough.And for those not interested or inclined to tweaking/optimizing
Series III's are very easy to set up and forget and achieve serious tracking/warp competence and sound great, very forgiving.Regards FredJ
