Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

You are correct Rich.....

The middle C is at 261 hz. ffrr is right that the 220 hz signal is an A below middle C.

There is a note at 110 hz....and this is what I wanted to point out to Peter. That would be the A(2) below middle C.

Now that the confusing stuff is cleared up we just need to revisit the original response to Peter. I believe we should discuss sound in terms of even and odd order harmonics. Especially the sound of amplifiers.

This is really the only substantial measurable difference that exists in a well designed amplifier.

Even order harmonics go with the flow so you are not likely to get listening fatigue even with a tube amp that runs 1.0 harmonic distortion. Most good tube amps are around 0.10 to 0.20 and they sound very natural and life like. I think a tube amp can get away with this level of distortion simply because it is mostly even ordered so it mimmics what happens in a musical instrument.

However an amp with even 0.025 percent harmonic distortion or lower where the dominant harmonics are odd ordered will stand out to those that know what to listen for.

I think this is a fascinating subject and I can tell you that I enjoy both solid state and tubes. So I do not take any sides on this issue. System matching is everything. On some speakers you just have to run solid state gear and on some speakers they cry for a tube amp.

Viva la difference.
