Maybe the laser table isn't quite following the path a stylus would take. It is normal for the ride depth of a stylus to change as the musical content changes, as the "pinch effect" occurs, and often the groove depth is modulated at the mastering stage to control groove width. The stylus always rides the groove at the point where it is the same width as the stylus. The laser table doesn't have this restriction, and may tend to read at a more constant depth from the surface. This could account for a slightly different interpretation of the stored waveform.-Bry
