In my pursuit of the ultimate record player (having previously owned or used turntables from Goldmund, Oracle, Voyd, Versa Dynamics, to name a few), I took the Nestea plunge and purchased an ELP laser turntable in Jan 2004. Upon playing my first record, I instantly knew this is an excellent sounding unit, rivaling the state of the art. As with all turntables it benefits from use with a superb sounding phono preamp like the Manley Steelhead. The laser turntable sounds like good analog. Not digital or CD's like others have commented. However by its design it does not have the same sonic signature (or colorations if you prefer) as a traditional mechanical turntable due to these possible sources: stylus/cartridge body resonance, platter resonance, tonearm resonance, acoustic feedback, drag-induced speed variation, etc. After seeing and hearing one in person, it makes traditional turntables seem like they're from the stone age (pun intended). Playing well recorded and pressed albums like Classic Records reissues is stunning.
