Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

I suspect that your theory is right

The ELP doesn't really recreate the way that a stylus traces the groove. Mitch Cotter did some research on this with an electron microscope perhaps 25 years ago; his results were published in (ugh) The Audio Critic . As I recall Kotter discovered that the stylus doesn't "play" the surface of the groove. Rather, the vinyl momentarily deforms around the stylus with the result that the stylus is actually tracing slightly below the surface of the vinyl. The ELP's laser on the other hand tracks the surface. Perhaps the difference in the two playback methods explains the difefrence in sound. Or maybe the ELP's electronics just aren't very good.
