In Reply to: Could I get a concise complete rundown on vinyl/analog superiority reguardless of equipment? posted by StylinLP on August 12, 2005 at 14:55:17:
For now at least I wouldn't consider listening to my older, pre Redbook CDs, and even vinyl records made through the mid 90s, on a digital format. IMO the vinyl does sound better. But newer music sounds better on digital and it sound pretty damn good even (especially!) compared to the sound of older vinyl releases.
I think it's mostly all about manufacturing and production - not format limitations. I don't think many (if any) audiophiles really have the quality of audio systems or of recordings to actually study the differences inherent between Redbook and vinyl without getting mucked up in the performance limitations of their own gear or recordings. But I've heard too many CDs sound better (on cheap CDPs) than their vinyl counterparts (on expensive TTs) to really care anymore about format differences - it's much more about manufacturing and production.
I've never compared a CD v. vinyl where the manufacturing of the recording and/or the quality of the playback gear weren't far and away the most obvious sources of the differences. This means I've never attributed the differences heard in direct comparisons to differences between the formats - I suspect other people are much more likely to attribute these difference to the formats. I think it's wrong.
If you can't get great enough sound out of your system with many current CD releases you best get to work on your own gear and forget about trying to convince others of the superiority of vinyl - because you're really not doing anything but transforming your poor results into the digital v. analog debate.
Give me rhythm or give me death!
