Well you could pick up both of the books from UHF magazine and their engineer paul bergman goes over the strength and weaknesses of both. http://www.uhfmag.com/ they won't trumpet the vinyl orthe cd format as either side would like but they will explain why analog has no worse dynamics than the Redbook cd and they prove why --- but they also expalin why it's adviseable to not buy amplifiers with damping factors above 40 which means they're probably going to like SET amplifiers --There is the dynamics argument but unfortunately the test is hindered by the fact that the experimenter is using a pretty low rent turntable and it still did well in their measurments
http://www.audioholics.com/techtips/specsformats/LPsvsCDsDynamics.phpThe problem is why does anyone care which one is better -- both can be very good - so what if you like CD better or you like Vinyl better -- if you actually gave a crap about MUSIC you'd buy BOTH formats because there are probably 50,000 albums on LP that are not available on CD so if you want to hear this music you had better get a turntable and go to your local high quality vinyl cd second hand outlet and get your music. And vinylphiles sorry but that latest Brittany Spears and Spice Girls album you closetly love is only on CD so you better buy a player if you want to listen to it.
If you want to argue the format - the format has less problem than the players playing it back. If anyone who loves vinyl and hates cd I would suggest you listen to CD playback from a company who actually gives a crap about music and about vinyl. Audio Note -- sorry to be my one note self but they are very serious about vinyl - Mr. Peter Q has over 70,000 albums and judging by the entry level turntables and their now second best $20k vinyl rig (Hot rodded Voyd Reference) I think they have a committment to excellent vinyl replay. Their digital to analog converters are hearalded as ome of if not the best in the world...certainly by FAR the best I've heard and I would be surprised if vinyl lovers would be unimpressed at what they get ou of CD replay -- but the design doesn;t use any of that corrective crap re-clocking jitter reducers or digital filters.
The measurements you seek have not been done because marketing departments rule the roost not engineers - having wow and flutter measured on my CD player makes no logical or even relevant sense (except to show that it's better than a turntable - which it is but then both are inaudible ANYWAY). You may as well be comparing a Ford Festiva to a Ferrari and saying the Festiva is better because it's HIGHER off the ground. Selecting the measurements being used is hardly fair.
For a start test the cd player at low levels and the solid state amp at low levels. They post the THD at full level which si where SS performs best and where SET performs worst -- the oppositie is true at low levels (where most of mostly listen to music). Cd players have less bits to work with at low level. Not surprising that coupled with SS amplifiers and poorly designed speakers that most people when auditioning all this crap have to keep turning it up and up to get it to sound good!
