who would win in a fight? (it would be a LONG fight)

Spiderman or Batman? Who is tougher?

cd VS lp is a battle between two commercial items. Most people choose one over the other for reasons of convenience. (Guess which one?)

Many of us inmates have been given a load of lps from somebody who doesn't listen to them any more or have bought a great many wonderful lps for $2 a piece and under. The former owners of these lps probably listen to cds instead. I stay with lps because I have this collection that I like, I couldn't even find many on cd, I like the sound, brushes don't bother me, and I can go to a lot of live concerts for the price it would cost to replace the collection with new cds (let alone the price of John Ellison's vinyl front end).

For me it comes down to individual recordings and simple economics. I can find great jazz and "classical" lps for very little money and its fun to see what is for sale at used record shops and stoop sales. If this doesn't convince somebody, then technical arguments probably won't either. Fine. They'll probably give you all their old records since you like vinyl so much.

If I want PJ Harvey's latest on vinyl I have to pay through the nose so I won't buy it on lp (this wasn't true 10 years ago but alas it is now). For the price of a UK import of "Uh huh her" I could see a live concert (alas not her's). Some stuff I could only get on CD at the time I bought them like Fournier's Bach suites in 1987. Starker's (which I bought around the same time) have been re-issued on vinyl, but too late for me. Other stuff has never been nor ever will be issued on vinyl (like Matthew Shipp's "Symbol Systems" on the NO MORE RECORDS label).

What I don't understand is why the members of the RIAA don't go back to a format that takes quite a bit of technical knowledge and equipment to copy. Hollywood doesn't learn from the recording industry's mistakes. Soon they'll be releaseing feature films digitally and complaining that perfect copies are showing up before the show opens.
