my take on this...

I'll preface this post with the fact that I use and really enjoy my OC9ML/II.

I think the love it/hate it polarization about the OC9 had more to do with system synergy than if the cartridge "sucks" or is "killer".

My rig leans towards warm. It is all tube and horns, vintage at that. The ARC SP3-A1 preamp has been rebuilt and utilizes coupling capacitors and resistors that lean toward a warm presentation. The Heath W5-M amplifiers have also been rebuilt with a similar parts selection. My Altec Horn speakers do not reach extremely high up in frequency response.

Therefore I can stand a cartridge that has a bit of sizzle to it. The strengths of my system overall are a solid midrange and the liquid, smooth presentation of my amps and preamp. A Grado (for instance) is just too much of a laid back cartridge for the rest of my rig (among other issues I have with Grados). My Altecs will show off every bit of grainy-ness and harshness, thankfully the OC9's faults are not grit and grain.

Perhaps I wouldn't enjoy the AT as much as I do if the rest of my system didn't compliment the strengths of the OC9.

System synergy is everything IMHO.

At the very least, I am happy with what I have and for now, I don't have to chase the next upgrade.
