Re: Vintage Turntables (EMT, Garrard, Thorens) Opinions please

Well I like to see an open mind and someone traveling down the vintage road to see for themselves whether any progess has been made, and if any sacrifices have been made along the road. But I also see that all the names you list are prestigious ones, and have left out the larger Lencos, being the L75, L78 and G99. All of the 'tables you list need from some to a lot of reconstruction (new plinth, tune-up, etc.) to perform in the modern tunrtable sweepstakes, which is the point with Lencos too. Anyway, as a representative of the idler-wheel technology which majors in slam, powerful bass and musical excitement, the Lenco has also easily beaten the tricked-out Linn LP12 (Cetech carbopn-fibre subchassis etc.) in every area including detail, and in all the usual audiophile categories. It's also beaten a Well Tempered Classic (in every way), a Nottingham Spacedeck (in every way), a first-generation VPT TNT, and several others, the list gets longer as time goes by. In a comparison between two re-built 'tables, one Lenco and one Garrard 401, the Lenco was deemed superior, and this more than once. Let not the torch-carrying crowd come to my house ;-), there are more factions in audio than there are political factions in Africa! Me, I simply love the sound of ALL idler-wheel decks, and simply used the Lenco to promote the idler-wheel cause, because being overlooked, as in this discussion, they can be had cheaply and so I was able to encourage many belt-drive afficionados from around the world to seek out and rebuild large idler-wheel drives. The Thorens TD124 is a quasi-idler-wheel drive, and as such won't have the slam of the idler-wheel drives, but is believed to be more refined (the Lenco is also very refined, however). All that said, there are many areas in which the older technologies excel, not so much superceded as abandoned. Have fun.
