Yes the 501 is about five thousand guiness ..... how's that for marketing nostalgia. It's an old English monetary unit - I think it was about One pound one shilling.
But Terry at Garrard can get you 301's or 401's. Prices for the TT's are not too bad but the plinth he makes is expensive at GBP500.
But the big thing is, if you buy from him you get a top performing unit.
Modern tonearms that work well I am told are:
1. Rega RB300 - Incognito wire and Garrard VTA adjuster.
2. SME M2, IV and/or V
3. Naim ARO.
5. HaddockTerry's view is that although the 301 is a more sought after model, the 401 is a better engineered table.
Jeff Day has some great stuff on the net about his project in rebuilding a 301 and a beautiful looking plinth.
