Re: Vintage Turntables (EMT, Garrard, Thorens) Opinions please

I´ve been thinking about getting an EMT for years now, but a recent conversation with a retired German studio technician and engineer made me change my mind (unless of course one falls into my hands anyway.

He owns all EMT tables and has used them for decades. He told me the following. First, despite what everyone says, there is very little difference in the sound of the different tables themselves. They are all extremely beautiful, to my taste, in their own ways. But what really put me off trying to acquire one and use it in the USA was his comments about keeping them running. The 930, he says, falls out of alignment within months of use, and we are not talking studio use but home use. The later tables are filled with complex electronics, any and all of which require very specialized servicing. He basically told me not to waste my time unless I had alot of money to burn. And here is the kicker- he uses a Thorens 124 for everyday use himself. And I know other people in Europe who own EMT 930´s but prefer the Garrards.

I would second the above recommendation for the Technics SP10, which I use myself. Excellent table. No collector interest as yet, so relatively very cheap.

Hope that might be of some use. Its good to be realistic if you intend to use the EMT´s Stateside.
