Re: Vintage Turntables (EMT, Garrard, Thorens) Opinions please

Hi Phil.
let me say first of all that I have no experience whatsoever with the EMT´s, so i can´t comment on them.
I have however had several 124 and 124/II, along with one 301 (Grease) and one 401.
I do no particulary like the 124. I felt the Garrards were much better, and I pariculary liked the 301, in fact I felt that the timing on that one was very good, although not quite as good as on the Luxman Pd350, which still is my main table.
Tonearms: The SMG212 was one of the cheaper Ortofon arms, and it is in my opinion not very good. If you want a 9´Ortofon at least get the RS212 or RM/RMG212.If you want Ortofon you should of course also consider the 12´versions, particulary the RM/RMG 309 and the RF297. I do however prefer the SME 3012 to all the Ortofons, also when used with an SPU. Which SPU should you get???. Well I believe that the main question here is system synergy. In my particular system the Royan N works best (It is quite simply the one that comes closest to my MC3000/II), but many feel that the royal N is too modern and hifi.
What should you get then: Well if I had the money I´d certainly go for the Verdier, but with a DECENT tonearm, I would not get the 3012. If it must be a 3012, then at least get the 3012R, which is much better than the old one in my opinion. But part of my desire for the verdier is that I simply just like the concept of the extremely heavy platter. I would not be surprised if the Basis Debut is actually a far superior table to all the other ones you mentioned.
My suggestion is that you LISTEN to some of the alternatives. A Garrard 301 with grease bearing and Ortofon RF 297 with an Ortofon SPU/A, is a VERY different beast to a Basis top of the line model. Audition both, and find out which one makes you want to listen to just one more record, and then another one, and possibly just a few hundred more. If a tt makes you want to hear all your records, then it is working, while if it makes you want to listen to a few CD´s as well, then it probaply is just not working.
best regards, lars.
