Hi PhilI have no experience with EMT but as far as the Garrards go i find very little difference between 301 and 401 with oil bearings. If anything i would prefer the 401. The grease bearing sounds obviously different but maybe too dark for my taste. Why is the 301 more desirable? Looks?
At the time i owned a SPU i had the choice between an Ortofon SSM212 and several 3012s. Shockingly, i actually preferred the sound with the ancient SSM although it looked and felt horrible. I wonder if it even had bearings :)
My personal taste probably gravitates towards the 124. It will certainly be less of a cultural shock switching from a Linn to the Thorens than any of the Garrards.
