Phil,If your budget is 3 to 4 grand I would go straight to www.garrard501.com and buy something from them. They are pricey but at least you know what you are getting. A completely rebuilt and serviced turntable. The 301 and 401 both are great, I have one of each, BUT buying anyhting on ebay takes some risk. That new 401 you talk about is in south east asia or somewhere like that...Good luck! I would spend your cash on something that you don't have to take apart and relube and sink into a custom base. I made the bases for my tables and took them apart and cleaned them and so on and so on, fun projects but lots of time. I have a SME 3012 and it is nice for what I listen to. Old mono jazz, I do not think they are worth the $1000 plus the get now. For your 3 or 4 grand you can a 401 nice tonearm and a power supply from Lorricraft and be done.
My 2 cents.
