I don't think cones Isolate anything...

...on the contrary, I believe that spikes and low-mass cone points allow a component to resonate more freely without damping (deadening) or lowering its frequency, thus shedding resonant energy as quickly as possible instead of "storing" it.

OTOH, massive cones like the big brass suckers from Mapleshade are basically just weights that lower the resonant frequency of the component they're attached to for good or ill - usually the latter, IME - based on the application.

Cones and spikes also rigidly couple the component to its support, which may or may not allow its resonant energy to better equalize (as opposed to "drain") with that support. Again, the results are a crap shoot, but they're usually excellent when reasonably light, rigid components and supports are used in conjunction.

Am I sure about that? Of course not! But I've used spikes and cones in certain applications based on that assumption with fairly consistent results.

I don't care for the deleterious musical effects I usually hear with mass-loading or excessive damping, so I rely on my turntable's suspension and otherwise rigid coupling directly to light/rigid supports throughout my system in order to achieve solid musical performence without any appreciable sonic compromises.
