Impossible for me to do an effective A:B comparison of the TX-2 and SL-1200MK5, as I'm only going from memory. That, and I'm not in the habit of scrutinizing the 'sound' of turntables and other audio gear. OTOH, I definitely hear things that aren't right, e.g. off-speed turntable, rumble or motor noise, off-center spindle holes in records, etc...

The TX-2 (with ability to fine-tune platter speed) held accurate speed and was very quiet, no obvious bias to the sound imparted by the turntable itself. Likewise, the quartz-locked Technics is dead accurate and quiet. So, to my ears, both turntables are capable of accurate and unbiased playback.

Of course there's huge differences in the two turntables, which outweigh sound quality of playback. TX-2 is a belt drive linear tracker with VTF set at 1.0 grams and fully automatic operation. The Technics has conventional tonearm and with interchangeable headshells, allowing quick and easy cartridge swappping. My Technics is also modified for 78 RPM and excels with that format.

I'd sum up by saying the TX-2 is a good choice if one routinely spins nothing but stereo LPs and the occasional 7" 45. My biggest complaint with it was the fully automatic cueing and motor driven tonearm, very slow and tedious in operation compared to manual cueing. The Technics offers far greater capabilities and flexibility in playing a wide range of formats including 78 RPM (if so modified).
