I did the incognito rewire. I used a DV 20XH and I could hear no difference before and after. To my ears it sounded extremely good both before and after. I don't trust my memory of sound completely, so I carefully made a CD recording of the same music before and after, as I find that done properly the CD version of an LP is virtually identical in sound to the original vinyl. The before and after CD recording could not be distinguished from one another.
So why are my results different? Some possibilities:
1. My ears aren't very discriminating. I can't tell pretty good sound from great sound. I don't really believe this based on lots of other experiences, but it is a possibility.
2. My system isn't revealing enough. I don't think this is the case. ARC electronics,
Vandersteen 5 speakers, good cables.
3. For the OP, the wiring original wiring was messed up, and the rewire cleaned up the problems. I though the wiring that came with my arm was pretty poor quality overall, especially the RCA connectors.
I'm sure others can add many other possibilities. FWIW, when I upgraded to a Basis 2200 TT with the Vector 4 arm, the difference was not subtle. In fact I found it almost scary how much better the new system sounded. I like vinyl, but I did not believe it was capable of sounding so good. I moved the Rega to my winery ( one of the few wine tasting rooms where you can hear vinyl while you taste), and, though it is no match for my newer TT, I still like its sound very much.
