The *sound of a tonearm* is partly dependent on the structure it is fastened to and the cartridge it is paired with, among many other things.Sonic character is created by a "chain of events". A CD player or DAC with selectable upsampling rate and filter options might let you decide that a combination of filter A with upsampling rate B provides the best overall sound. Similarly, in the analog realm where turntable reside, there is a chain of events (sometimes changeable, sometimes not) to consider.
If someone says, "I like tonearm A much better than tonearm B...", what they are really saying is "I like SYSTEM A much better than SYSTEM B...". You will never hear a tonearm (or any other audio component) in a vacuum. This is why one guy might truly prefer a relatively cheap Rega RB-250 over a relatively expensive SME V. One tonearm may look, feel, and measure differently than another one but the sum of all parts is the thing that matters, at the end of the day.
Just sayin'...
