Don't really play a lot of CD's and my CD player would not be considered very high end LOL-on the very few that I have duplicates of on vinyl (I can actually only think of one actually) I'd say that they sound pretty similar but it's a digitally recorded record.
Also wouldn't say that my 103R (my current 103R is potted in an ebony body and has a Soundsmith ruby cantilever and OCL stylus) is overtly warm. I also wouldn't describe it as being laid back. Slightly warm side of neutral maybe (a function of the ebony, my aluminum bodied 103R is slightly more "neutral")-I wouldn't say that it's "smooth" either, at least not "universally" smooth. If the recording is smooth that's what I get-if it's a bit rough around the edges my cartridge is not going to homogenize it or clean it up.
Refined in the top end and through the midrange would be a more apt description and I'd described the midrange as very full and vibrant (ballsy would be a good description) without being forward in any way. It sure isn't strident and, as you've heard from others, most would not describe it that way. I used the cartridge stock for quite some time as well and would not describe the stock cartridge as being strident either.
My equipment is listed in the inmates systems.
As John said, maybe you've got a dud or the cartridge is just not your cup of tea and you want something that is much more warm and laid back. I once owned a Koetsu Black-if they're similar now to the way they used to be maybe you'd prefer something like that. It tended to me everything sound warm and cozy as I recall. "Lush" as they say LOL.
Time for you to move on to something else perhaps.
