In this case the repair is for a burned up transformer on a George Wright preamp.
George died a couple summers ago having never provided circuit diagrams, parts lists, or test point comparisons for any of his amplifiers, line pre-amps or phono sections. He kept it all in his head. He is not the only designer to keep this kind secrecy.
Most repair technicians will not undertake repairs requiring reverse engineering, especially when there are no circuit diagrams, parts lists and test points to check the circuit. I am doing this repair work at no charge.
Apparently not only was his designs kept secret, he also had transformers custom wound. George's owners manuals warned against operating the power supply without the load being connected to the main circuit. That pretty much precludes me from asking an owner with a working unit to potentially burn up their transformer to bench test it.
In spite of all the obstacles I am close to getting a successful result.
