Or he needs to use the 4 anti-skating bands at the end of side one to test the tracking ability of that gear.
In my experience the three bands on side two are an OK check but they will not test how the rig will perform on the extra demanding LPs that are more common in modern reissues. Not to mention some high quality original pressings.
I agree that gear is nothing to shout about. I owned that cartridge many, many years ago and I couldn't wait until payday so I could get rid of it. Back in those days it was a new cartridge almost every month.
