No one is saying that test records are gospel. Nor are they the only way to test your setup but ignoring the tracking ability of your setup is asking for trouble. You need to use both the test record to verify the tracking ability and listen to familiar LPs to verify the results of the alignment.
Using your standard LPs alone is asking for an issue. Those LPs may not have anywhere close to the velocity contained on test records. A test record will verify if your setup can handle LPs that you may not use to test the alignment.
It is important to make sure that the setup can track the most dynamic LPs so you may ensure that mistracking is avoided. Are you aware of the peak velocities in the LPs you use to verify your setup? If not, how can you know if your setup is aligned properly?
One other thing. It seems like a stupid thing to ignore this issue. Why, in the name of god, would we spend the money we do, go through the trouble we go through to find the best LPs, only to limit the playback capability of our analog rigs to LPs with a certain velocity?
This is important,
Ed
