I am not sure what 'SP' stands for, but I have heard/read that1) Victor was behind the Denon direct-drive technology. This is 'evidenced' by the fact that Victor was the first to introduce bi-directional servo technology.
2) Sony was 'involved' because of the magnetic strip tech to go with the quartz locked loop that Denon got from Sony.
3) Technics designed the Denon tables for them. I have heard this several times from English speakers outside of Japan but not once from anyone in Japan.
4) NHK was at the root/heart of the technology of most of Denon's consumer audio offerings from the late 60s on because NHK co-developed or was involved in developing almost every bit of broadcasting technology used in Japan. NHK's 'involvement' in helping Denon develop their DD tables is 'evidenced' by the fact that the biggest Denon DD motors, and their 103 line of carts, and their 'heavy' arms like the 302, 305, 307, and 308 were all offshoots of the technology on the DN-306 and DN-307 broadcast consoles. At the time, NHK engineers were the cream of the crop in anything to do with sound and sight physical and electrical engineering and they had vast resources to throw at the problem - certainly far more than a commercial enterprise like Denon.
But we forget that Denon and their affiliate/brother were players in commercial broadcast in Japan way back. And I have heard the first DD design in Japan was a Denon back in the 30s or 40s...
I like the Denons too... :^) In principle even more than the Technics, just because of the linear vs slotted motors. But the big Technics in big plinths with nice arms sound pretty great too.
I owe the board a shootout report. Lots going on but I should finish it. Golden Week coming up. Will try to get to it then.
