A perfect example

of why a forum like this is superior in certain ways to a magazine like Stereophile. Michael Fremer is intelligent, knowledgeable, and a skilled writer. However, his job is essentially to be an advocate for today's high-end audio industry. He might not disagree that a skilled tinkerer could spend $1,500 for parts and a few hours of tinkering and turn an SL-1200 into something that compares favorably with a new $5,000 table, as a poster below says he has done. It just isn't his job to say that. Like any skilled advocate, he doesn't intentionally publish lies (though he can make mistakes, like anyone else), but is selective with his truths.

Some of the contributors to this thread may be less knowledgeable than Mr. Fremer (or more), but they have the great advantage of not having a major personal financial stake in the discussion. More power to all of you!
