RE: Fremer and the larger problem

Maybe, maybe not. Perhaps that is simply the role of forums like this one.

For me Stereophile has its place, but I never would have learned about the Shure M97xE with Jico SAS stylus, or the Denon DL-160, two carts that (in my experience) outperform more expensive carts that I bought largely on Stereophile's recommendation in the past.

On the other hand, maybe Stereophile's readers (as a group) don't really want to know about this kind of thing. Perhaps they want ready-made solutions that are easily obtainable from a network of hi-fi dealers, and aren't too interested in DIY projects, etc. I have to assume that Stereophile's editors know their demographic better than I do, so beyond offering a suggestion of what I would personally like to see in their pages, I would refrain from judgment.

They do seem to have changed their focus slightly in recent years, especially in some of Art Dudley's columns, to address topics and projects somewhat outside of the audiophile mainstream (reconditioning a Thorens 124, Denon DL-103 and Zu Denon carts, etc.).

In the end, I think it is a mistake to rely too heavily on any one source for information (not just in the world of audio), or to put one's faith completely in any one source.

I've learned a lot from passionate hobbyists here and in other forums over the the years. I've also seen distortions, agendas and half-baked theories presented as fact. You have to take much of what you read here with a grain of salt, and also make an effort to separate the wheat from the chaff. In general, I believe it is worth the effort to do so.

My sense is that there is also a tendency toward trend following on this forum, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but when I read the enthusiasm for certain products from members here, I have to keep in mind the previous levels of enthusiasm for now out-of-favor products.

There was a time on this forum when the VPI Scout was the turntable to have. Anyone who had less had never really heard what vinyl playback was truly capable of, anyone who had more had wasted their money (I'm exaggerating for effect, but I think many longtime inmates will recognize a ring of truth to what I say). Now the very mention of the Scout, or VPI in general, will bring out a raft of negative comments about their "house sound," some from former owners of said tables, and some no doubt from those who have never heard them. But that's how it goes. The table was probably never quite as good as it's proponents made it sound when it was the flavor of the month, and I seriously doubt it sounds as bad as it's detractors say now.
