"As to Fremer the man, FWIW it could be argued that he has had the most impact of any one person in revitalizing general interest in vinyl."
I have very high regard for Michael Fremer and his role in vinyl advocacy. He has long been one of the loudest and most passionate voices in favor of vinyl playback, and did so in many public forums at a time when such claims were treated with about as much respect as UFO conspiracy theories. Along the way I am sure he has made some mistakes, or had some lapses in judgement (as we all have), but his overall impact on this hobby has been extremely positive in my opinion.
I know that many here will disagree with his assessment of the sonic capabilities of the SL-1200, but I do not think it is fair to question his integrity on the basis of that. As far as I can tell his passion for vinyl playback is genuine, and when he offers an opinion it is sincere, and not motivated by any external factors.
That is not to say that his judgment must be agreed with, or that he is infallible, but I do wish folks would lay off the personal attacks and questioning of integrity. Such claims merely poison the well, and do nothing to advance our state of knowledge about the the SL-1200 or vinyl playback in general.
