Welcome Licorice Pizza (LP) lovers! Setup guides and Vinyl FAQ.

They can both be right.

Belt drive is a pretty straightforward thing. Select a low noise AC or DC motor, put a pulley on it and put a belt around the platter. Okay, there's a little more to it than that, but it's nothing like Direct Drive.

Almost all DD motors are in-house engineered custom devices. Open up any two DD tables and their DD motors will probably look quite different. All of them will have an accompanying driver board with custom, probably out-of-production IC's.

The point is that there's a lot variation in DD design and some of them were quite inferior to belt drive. Also, they frequently had several adjustment points and could easily drift into erratic behavior. Anecdotal evidence arose that DD had this fundamental flaw which became gospel when most of the companies who were capable of producing DD tables left the market.

So, we have to evaluate DD on a case by case basis. But, we can measure speed aberrations and discover which tables are suitable for hi-fi use.
