I just wish...

I just wish that the people who slam the sound of direct-drive turntables and/or try to stereotype the sound of them would stop acting like they are so sure about what is causing the "sonic signature" that they claim is part of the direct drive experience. Even if it were true that all or most DD 'tables add a "hard, brittle texture to music", I don't see how there is any way to tell exactly WHAT is causing the problem, if there really is a problem. DD turntable construction is usually quite different from that used in other types of turntables in many ways (plinth, bearing isolation, platter, etc...), and I don't see how one would possibly be so sure that the speed control mechanism is the primary culprit. Actually, I think the "culprit" (if one exists) is more than likely to be the manner in which vibrational energy from any source is being contained and/or transferred throughout the drivetrain, platter, and chassis of the typical DD 'table. Remember when Fremer reviewed the Grand Prix Monaco DD table some time ago? He never claimed to hear any hardness or brittleness with that 'table, and when you look at how the carbon fiber chassis and platter of the Monaco turntable is designed you might begin to understand why. Ditto for Idler Drive turntables: How can we be so sure that their drive systems are what gives them their signature "sense of drive"? We might be better off if we assigned the signature sound of any turntable to some unique combination of every element inherent in their design.
