In Reply to: Has anyone bought a new mfg turntable lately, other than the SL1200? posted by artemus on November 18, 2010 at 09:49:17:
Well, I did not exactly buy a new turntable but I want to chime in about a used Technics Q3 turntable that I bought early this year. In my system, the music now just sounds right. I use the AT95 SE cartridge with it and a VP129 phono preamp going into an all tube integrated out to the Vandersteens. Bach, Mahavishnu, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, even Ronnie Laws all sound just so accurate. Also, Shostakovich or Stravinsky sounds really intense at certain musical peaks.
I tried the Rega P3 (new) twice with the 10x5 but each time it did not bring out the bass nor was the clarity that I have now ever present. I bought a brand new Nottingham Horizon next. It sounded beautiful (stunning at first with more weight to the music) but sometimes the cartridge bounced or skipped on certain records. With an all tube amp, the Horizon was a bit too much of a good thing in the mids and I like the music to be more balanced from top to bottom. Sold both TTs and took some time off from vinyl. Then, at a local stereo repair shop, there was the Technics Q3 in used but good condition for 1/4th the price of the Rega P3. I took it home and it fits in great with the ASL 1003DT, VP129, and Vandersteens. I need to mention all this again because I believe that turntables are difficult to assess in a vacuum like when compared piece by piece or by style of design (DD vs. belt-drive)but not actually played along with an amp and speakers to hear how it all sounds vs. how it looks!
I have played over 125 different records on the Technics Q3 (all without a skip) and that tells me that in the past, all those times I had to change the record was due to the cartridge or the Rega or Nottingham. In summary, I tried to like the Rega, I do like the Horizon, but I am very happy with a Technics. It keeps me thinking about the music!
