I hope you are correct about cartridges, but it is dangerous to use the rubber suspension components of vintage autos as an example to support your case for durability. During any decent auto restoration, one of the first things one does is to replace the rubber bushings in the suspension. Upon inspection, such bushings are almost always cracked, fractured, stiffened, etc. But then again, they are subjected to much harsher conditions than is the suspension of any phono cartridge.
