This is fact ! Rubber suppliers, thus rubber quality, varied thru the years. The worst offender was probably the manufacturer that "outsourced" when vinyl was still in it's heyday, like Shure. It amazes me that one thrifty company could actually have created such a panic.
Granted, much more modern, high priced manufacturers have been found guilty in the last two decades. But, my friends, please stop thinking this nonsense. Don't you still see many vintage cars on the road ? Are their rubberized suspensions about to fail ? Certain climates and environments can cause premature failures, but the failures you have heard about are more the quality control types. As a clear example, the modern mc cart suppliers products that have had failures have had many more successful ownerships.
I have many 50 year old cartridges with their original rubber dampers functioning very properly. There is no predictability about rubber failure. If it can happen at anytime to any vintage or modern brand, then simply buy a working example, like one without sagging or stiff suspension. Vintage carts are very worthy...
