Sorry to hear about that mishap! Anywawy, there is always the Shure V15 ($300), the Shelter 501 (Ca $700), or the Music Man modified Grado from England at $795. None of these are bright, and probably give you a good range without an exxagerated treble (which I also abhor).I currently run a Scheu modified Benz and love it, but it is sensitive to loading and runs great at 1000R. You can get info on these at their website (sorry don't have that for you - search on Scheu +Benz). The modifications include a better stylus and they use silver so you don't run into oxidation down the road. I am told that the latest Scheu modified Benz Ruby is outstanding, esp the bass, but that is a bit out of your price range.
Other MC's include the Ortofon Kontrapunkt B or the Clearaudio Aurum Beta S (or its latest iteration). I think these might be too forward for you, from what little I know.
If it were me I'd get the Shure and see what that is like - it is not an overpriced cartridge and you could easily sell it after 20 hours of determining if it suits your rig. At least that way you can start from neutral and have a fairly widely known reference to describe what you are looking for in an alternative...
