Naim CD2 ($4,250) versus a non upgraded Linn LP12 circa 1985 with a Black Ittok XVII and a Dynavector 10x4 ($1,200).
I did an A/B test with these two last year, comparing 15 LP's to the 'same' CD's for four friends. One was an audio engineer, the other three were friends who just enjoy music. All four preferred the Linn. Reasons cited were "a more realistic image of the music", "a deeper view", "more distant detail", "a more pleasantreble", "greater emotion in singers" and from all four listeners "Less fatigue with the records than CD's".
I sold the CD2 (I had owned it for just two months) and my rapidly acquired collection of CD's after this comparison. Since then I have upgraded the Linn with an Origin Live DC motor/Power supply and a Cetech carbon fiber subchassis. These upgrades have elevated the deck to entirely another level. Oh, and I replaced the Dynavector cartridge with a Koetsu Black. CD's ......schmee dees.
Happy spinning,
Mark
