I am not sure how one can draw a general conclusion on this question, because amplifiers differ from one another in their input sensitivity and of course speakers differ greatly in efficiency from one another. Also, linestages offer anywhere from zero added gain to 15-20db added gain. In my own experience with the MC2000, used in either one of two systems, in one case to drive a Beveridge amplifier that direct-drives Beveridge speakers and the other case to drive Atma-sphere amplifiers hooked to Sound Lab ESLs made more efficient by my modification, it takes at least 80db total phono plus linestage gain to get the goods out of the MC2000, and 85db seems even better.
