Yes, what a a pain owning an LP12 was especially the early ones (I bought mine in 1974) when the springs were too soft ( this was before Linn bought their own spring winding machine) and had to be fettled every couple of weeks. That, btw, is how I eventually ended up at Linn's factory learning how to do it myself.

The mazak alloy was, I think,photosensitive. The platters were lacquered to minimise cosmetic mishaps but unfortunately not entirely succesfully. I ate an apple then went over to the turntable. I must have had a little apple juice on a finger as I touched the platter and the lacquer at the contact point just melted away leaving a mark that I bore with for the next few years until I chnanged to my Michell Orbe.
