We are seeing the iconic designers from Japan leave us. Seji Yoshioka of Transfiguration has passed on. Isamu Ikeda passed on last year also, although he had retired from designing. A few years ago we lost Dr.Tominori of Dynavector. I believe Hisayoshi Nakatsuka is in his 90's, so time is short there also.
When the time comes I am going to use Steve at VAS for the retip. As long as suspension is good these cartridges have to use diamond and cantilever assemblies built by companies like Namiki or Ogura, so i do believe a rebuild is possible. At one time I had a diamond fall of a Koetsu Urushi. I sent it out for the TOTL Namiki replacement cantilever, and I had an OEM cartridge to compare it to when it got back, I could not hear the difference between the two. Truth is I never liked the presentation of the Urushi, so I moved both cartridges on.
Now the Ikeda is a different beast due to its design, we will have to see what my options are when that one needs a new diamond. These tables are pretty low maintenance, I just keep them dusted and listen to records on them.
