It seems like your excellent post has been hijacked. I am not really convinced that there are all that many "new" materials used in modern turntables. My first turntable (I am an old fossil) was a Weathers and it had an aluminum platter, wood arm, rim drive, blah blah blah. Consider the SME line of tonearms. The materials of construction are much the same today as the ones introduced back in 1959. You mentioned the Garrard 401 and the Thorens TD-124, again in terms of materials, not much difference from a whole host of those made today. So I would argue that the materials are not the big difference. Designs are different. Tolerances are tighter. Motors are better. Attention to detail is often greater.BTW how do you like living west of the Cascades? I assume by now you have settled in? I miss the PNW a lot.
Regards,
Bill
