If I had to wager money on which contributed more to the 103R's different (and most argue improved) sound, I'd put my money on the higher purity copper in it. The damping is probably a good thing as evidenced by the improvements that the wood body brings but realistically it would be expected that the wood body would do much more in that area than the damping material installed in the body of the 103R.
