I'm sure that Chris knows, but it's so basic that it's easy to forget to mention it. When soldering delicate components, especially when learning how, use a heat sink on the wire between the component and the solder joint. They're commercially available, but you can use a simple strip of sponge tied around the wire w/an overhand loop and soaked w/water. Enjoy your soldering on that project, and then the music!
