Re: Dynaco ST-70 on eBay

Hang on to those XF1s!!! They are second only to (IMHO) a Dutch Amperex Bugle Boy. Some would find them superior-- I would agree that the XF1 has more textured mids, but Amperex treble is peerless. When you get the 70, you will want to make a couple changes; It has an old-fashioned Selenium bias rectifier that should be replaced with a diode; the bias caps should be changed as well. RadioShack will have the diode and the two 50-100microfarad/100v caps you'll need; if you don't have a great deal of soldering experience, this is a cakewalk for any repair shop or technically inclined friend-- diodes are easily ruined by the heat of the soldering iron, though, so it's not the best "learn to solder" project. The only other part that may give you a problem is the silver "can" capacitor that filters the DC voltage-- TriodeElectronics.com offers a cap board that tucks neatly inside and will greatly improve the sound. Very, very easy to install. If you've never soldered, practice with some wire first, and then it'll be no problem. Enjoy! Any problems you run into can be fielded by myself and many other real decent and knowledgeable people on the Tubes asylum. Chris
