Home Vintage Asylum

Classic gear from yesteryear; vintage audio standing the test of time.

recent cassette experiences

It won't be long before there won't be any premium cassette tape made and the cassette will go back to its origins of being a portable recorder for dictation and for recording student lectures.

Its already happened. The big retail stores now carry only normal bias tapes. Two years ago, I bought high-bias tapes at Best Buy... not anymore.

Electronics are also changing. I recently bought a new Walkman to replace a 10 year old one, and discovered the new model (Sony WM-FX495), while otherwise feature-rich, lacks a tape selector. It won't properly play high-bias tapes!

Sigh.
