If you haven't done so already, pick up the recent Stereophile w/Art Dudley's Moth Cicada review. Somewhere in this issue is a good dialog between Art and John Atkinson in which the differences between a speaker's sensitivity rating (what you are probably quoting) versus it's efficiency, in which it's impedance characteristics come into play. Very good explanation there about how a sensitive speaker may not be terribly efficient, while a speaker with so-so sensitivity ratings may in fact be more efficient than you'd expect.I haven't had great success with passive preamps to date: They sound very "clean" but kind of antiseptic and lean. I suspect that when we've got nothing buffering the volume control pot, choice of cables and source components becomes much more critical. I don't know how much capacitance my existing cables have, but I'll be looking to try new cables which have very little-preferably well under 50 pf/M
